A flutter on the lame chairwoman
A report in The Sydney Morning Herald says that bookies are busy setting the odds on all manner of important race meetings at the moment.
There’s Derby Day and, of course, the Melbourne Cup, but perhaps they might consider taking a few punts on the odd annual company meeting.
After all, days after the Cup, punters of a different art will pause to watch what’s expected to be one of the better annual meetings this year.
The Qantas board will front shareholders in Melbourne to try to explain how they got it so wrong when they recommended selling the airline on the cheap.
Outgoing chairwoman Margaret Jackson might even try explaining why she said her own shareholders would be “mental” if they didn’t accept.
Strangely enough, Her Maj hasn’t exactly been front and centre of late and we’re looking forward to hearing her response to some of the questions expected to lob from cheerful shareholders.
So imagine our surprise when word filtered through on Friday that Her Maj isn’t race fit.
We hear Maj showed up to the AGM of Billabong on Friday a bit lame. She hobbled on stage on crutches before taking her place at the directors’ table where, we’re told, she looked a touch happier.
We’d hate to think there’s a chance she might be a late scratching from her Qantas farewell performance.
After all, there’s so many shareholders keen to wish her well on her post-Qantas travels.
Maj had recurring problems with deep vein thrombosis or economy class syndrome earlier this year, an odd complaint for someone far more accustomed to sitting at the pointy end of a Qantas jet.
Good thing, then, that she lives in Melbourne and won’t have too far to travel.
Still, when it comes to framing a market, there are a few punters wondering if Maj will in fact show up.
