Rowland is taking over the position from his former boss at Co op Travel Mike Greenacre, who stepped down from the company after the merger with Thomas Cook .

Hugh Morgan of Cosmos Holidays Plc has been reappointed to the Board representing principal members with a turnover of over £50 million.

Alistair Rowland said: ‘I am delighted to be appointed to ABTA’s Board at such a time of continued change for the industry.  Midcounties Co-op Travel represents the large independent sector well, particularly with the growth plans we have to become a significant force in distribution in the UK.

"I will work hard to promote the sector, particularly in the areas of education, commerciality and customer service."
