Advice against travel to Tunisia could be lifted ‘within weeks’

Advice against travel to Tunisia could be lifted ‘within weeks’ after the Foreign Secretary met with EU foreign ministers yesterday.

Philip Hammond said the travel advice could change in time for the winter season if the country improves security measures such as having more guards in hotels, reports the Daily Mail.

He said: "I’ve said that as soon as there has been further progress that gives us more confidence that the threat is diminished, and further mitigation of security measures, then we will keep our travel advice under constant review.

"We’d like nothing better than to be able to give a green light for tourism, but we can only do that when we are confident that it is safe."

"Whether it is weeks or months, we are talking about Tunisia’s re-emergence into the market for probably the winter season, as there is an over-winter business in Tunisia."

Tour operators and airlines repatriated clients earlier this month after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office changed its advice to prevent all but essential travel to Tunisia over fears that a further terrorist attack was ‘highly likely’.

It followed the beach attack in Sousse on June 26 where 38 people were shot dead including 30 British Thomson and First Choice customers.

Thomas Cook, Thomson and First Choice cancelled all outbound flights to Tunisia for the summer season up to and including October 31.
