Aer Lingus considers shutting down Manchester base
Aer Lingus is mulling shutting down its Manchester Airport base.
It comes just weeks after a cabin crew strike
The airline is entering into a collective consultation process with the workforce.
About 200 jobs are at risk.
The Irish flag carrier offers flights transatlantic flights from Manchester to destinations including New York, Boston and Barbados.
The airline’s financial performance ‘continues to significantly lag behind that of Aer Lingus’s Irish long-haul operating margin; it says.
It is now ‘entering into a collective consultation process with staff representatives.’
“This makes it difficult to justify further investment in the Manchester base and raises the question as to whether there are potentially better alternative uses of the two aircraft that are in the Manchester base.”
“This situation has prompted a necessary consideration of its long-term viability.”
“This process will explore all the options in respect of the base, however, staff were also advised that it will also include the possibility of a base closure.”
