After second breach, security review urged for San Jose airport

Two San Jose city officials are calling for an urgent review of security at Mineta San Jose International Airport after the second major breach in four months.

It comes after ‘serial stowaway’ Marilyn Hartman evaded ticket checks at the airport to fly to Los Angeles where she was arrested.

Hartman 62, has been apprehended seven times this year at San Francisco and on one occasion made her way to onto an aircraft without a ticket before being discovered.

"I’m definitely concerned about the two we know about and just as concerned about those that we may not know about," said San Jose councilman Pete Constant who has called for a meeting along with colleague Sam Liccardo.

"I’m disappointed by some of the claims by airport officials that nothing’s wrong, and there was no serious threat," Constant said.

John Aitken, San Jose airport’s acting assistant director of aviation said Hartman "was fully screened like the rest of the 9 million passengers," that fly out of the airport each year.

"She was as safe as any other passenger that walks through here," Aitken said.

"We need to be clear about security at the airport, and any flight risks to passengers," Constant added.

"It’s important that we be transparent with the public about what we regard as a risk."

A decision on whether to hold a public meeting on airport security will be discussed by the council next week.
