‘Agents competing head-to-head with operators’ – tech review
Dynamic packaging technology is enabling travel agents to compete directly against commission-cutting operators, according to the author of a new report.
The 2006-07 Travel Agency Technology review by Genesys Systems confirms the latest technology trends with many suppliers offering dynamic packaging technology, content management systems and online booking engines to power agency websites.
Genesys senior partner Paul Richer said: “With the increased popularity of dynamic packaging and with the trend towards agents specialising in particular product areas, they are closing-in on tour operators’ market space, in some cases competing head-to-head.
“The latest technology available to travel agents reflects the increasing sophistication of running a successful agency. Whilst once upon a time it may have been enough for agents to simply be experts in travel, in order to really prosper in today’s market they also need a firm grasp of technology and the opportunities that this brings.
“It is no longer enough to sit in one’s high street shop waiting for customers to come in the door. Those agents that are thriving are reaching out across the web, often packaging their own products rather than relying on earning a living from dwindling tour operator commissions.”
The latest edition of the review runs to more 140 pages, providing the low-down on over 50 technology suppliers and their products.
The review costs £59.50 plus shipping and can be ordered from Genesys’
website at www.genesys.net.
