AI pilots critical of ‘unsafe’ plan to dock pay for delays

Air India pilots have criticized the government’s plan to cut airline employees’ pay for any flight delays, saying it will create an "unsafe" environment.

The government last week directed state owned Air India to withhold up to 10% of a worker’s salary if found directly responsible for causing a flight delay such as late arrival at work.

The directive, issued by Captain A K Govil, Air India’s head of operations, said it would affect cabin crew, pilots, engineers and ground handling personnel.

"This futile exercise is going to be detrimental to flight safety as employees directly involved with the departure of a flight will try to cut corners in the safety practices in order to avoid delays," the Indian Commercial Pilots Association said in a letter addressed to airline management.

The Association claims the high level of delays were mainly due to lack of oversight by the airline’s management, and questioned why a parliamentary committee’s findings, which backed this up, have not been acted upon by the government.

"We know there is an acute shortage of pilots and our innocent passengers are paying dearly for the delays on daily basis but no recruitment of pilots has taken place in years. This is a pure case of mismanagement," the Association added.
