Air Canada’s 737 Max jets grounded until January 2020

Air Canada is joining Southwest Airlines in removing its 737 Max planes from schedules until 2020.

The airline has taken the Max out of schedules until at least January 8, 2020.

"The impact of the Boeing 737 Max grounding will be felt more acutely in our very busy summer period," CEO Calin Rovinescu said.

It ‘reflects our prudent approach to scheduling, giving customers certainty when booking their fall and especially their winter holiday travel.’

As a result, Air Canada is forecasting of 2% drop in seat capacity in the third quarter.

Rival WestJet also announced extended cancelations for its fleet of Boeing 737 Max jets, but seems to be a little more confident they will be cleared to fly again before the year-end.

WestJet has removed them until November 4, 2019.

Canada’s second-largest carrier has a fleet of 13 Max aircraft and the continued grounding will mean the suspension of some domestic and international routes including Halifax to Paris for the remainder of the summer season.
