Air India expanding free checked baggage allowance
Air India is increasing its free checked baggage allowance for a limited time on all flights.
With immediate effect, all flyers will receive 25kg free baggage on flights until February 7, 2016.
This is an extra 10kg more than many other Indian airlines offer.
"It is a short-term promotional offer to help travellers ahead of the peak season. Indians like to travel heavy, particularly during the festive season that will start towards the end of the year," said an Air India spokesperson.
An Air India statement said the revised limit is applicable for travellers on all economy fares and an additional 10kg allowance will be offered when infants are travelling.
"The free baggage allowance of the international sector will be applicable, for passengers travelling on AI domestic sectors and connecting to AI international sectors and vice versa," the spokesman added.
It is a move by the flag carrier to woo back customers after years of falling market share.
AI carries about 15% of the domestic air market, compared to IndiGo which has about 40%.
Airline regulator DGCA has imposed a rule that all airlines offer a minimum 15kg free baggage allowance per person on all domestic flights.
