Air India eyes Jet Airways’ grounded aircraft

Air India is hoping to bag five of Jet Airways’ grounded Boeing 777s.

Ashwini Lohani, AI’s chairman and managing director has written to the State Bank of India (SBI), the principle lender for Jet Airways, which effectively controls the defunct airline.

The national carrier plans to use them on international routes such as Delhi and Mumbai to London and Dubai, and Delhi-Singapore.

In the letter, Lohani said: "In tune with Air India’s role and responsibilities as the national carrier, we would be happy to alleviate this inconvenience by considering the possibility of operating a few B777 aircraft, on their established routes that as per media reports stand suspended at present.

"Subject to approvals and financial viability, we can examine the possibility of taking five B777’s on wet/dry lease basis from SBI, the terms for which can be mutually thrashed out."

SpiceJet has already taken several grounded Boeing 737 plane from Jet Airways, which has helped alleviate disruption due to the grounding of its 737 Max jets.

SpiceJet has taken 16 already and plans to dry lease another six in the coming days.

More airlines are expected to submit proposals to the SBI to take over some of Jet’s lucrative airport slots in India and overseas.
