Air India flight lands with wing on fire
Five passengers were slightly injured following a mid-air fire as an Air India jet touched down at Delhi airport.
The left wing of flight AI-405 caught fire on approach at Indira Gandhi Airport.
A leak in the hydraulic system was cited as the cause and the airport was put in full emergency evacuation mode with fire crew and medical teams waiting on the tarmac.
All 153 people onboard were evacuated safely but five were treated for minor injuries.
"We didn’t see the fire but there was a lot of smoke," passenger Rajendra Desai told local news reporters.
Another passenger British author William Dalrymple said the airline knew there was a problem even before the plane took off from Khajuraho.
He said the Khajuraho-Varanasi-Delhi flight was originally cancelled due to a maintenance problem before being reinstated after a delay.
"After an hour, we were told that the flight would take off. Probably this was because of pressure on the (Air India) station manager but it was a wrong decision," Dalrymple told the Hindustan Times.
"When we landed in New Delhi and were waiting for our baggage, I spoke with an Air India technician who was on the aircraft, and he said he had been terrified because of the problem with the aircraft and had been chanting a mantra throughout the flight," he said.
