Air Transat preps for pilot strike
Air Transat has started planning ahead for a pilots’ strike, and could start canceling some flights today.
It is a response to a 72-hour strike notice issued by the pilot union.
The airline said it could make some flight cuts today although the Air Line Pilots Association and airline management are still in talks.
The airline said it will start progressively canceling some flights ahead of a full suspension of flights by Tuesday if a last-minute deal isn’t reached.
Air Transat passengers booked on flights this week can change their travel plans without charge.
Additionally, flights can be canceled for a flight credit to be used at a later date.
Air Transat will focus on repatriating passengers, flight crews, and aircraft to ensure they are not stranded overseas.
Currently with no new deal on the table, the strike is set to begin on Wednesday and affects about 700 pilots.
The union has been fighting for a new pilot contract with improved pay, benefits and working conditions.
“While our priority is now to take care of our customers, we remain committed to the process in order to conclude a negotiated agreement,” airline spokesperson Julie Lamontagne said.
