Don’t fly with cash-strapped Interjet, Mexico consumer watchdog says
A Mexican federal agency has taken the unusual step of warning customers not to book with struggling airline Interjet.
The airline was in the news this week after it cancelled all flights as it was unable to pay for aviation fuel.
That impacted about 3,000 customers over several days, the Tico Times reported.
However this is just one of several issues due to its lack of liquidity.
"Interjet has been facing various problems in its commercial operation for several months, among them, the suspension of various international routes, the lack of payment to its personnel, the suspension of the license to operate the international air service to Canada and the embargo of bank accounts, goods and brands," said Mexico’s Federal Consumer Attorney’s Office in a message to consumers.
"Under current conditions, Interjet does not provide certainty, equity or legal security to consumers in their commercial relationship."
Right now, there is major uncertainty about its immediate future.
The airline resumed some flights on November 3, and has promised to pay salary arrears for workers, but one major investor says it has virtually no cash reserves.
