AirAsia adds Yogyakarta to network
KUALA LUMPUR – The low cost carrier action in Asia continues to hot up with AirAsia confirming that it will launch direct flights to Yogyakarta.
Yogyakarta will be AirAsia’s 13th destinations in Indonesia.
Initially, AirAsia will offer four flights per week to Yogyakarta departing from the LCC Terminal, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The airline’s new 180-seat Airbus A320 will be deployed for the route.
Tony Fernandes, group CEO AirAsia, said, “Yogyakarta has long been on our list of destinations that we want to fly to and it certainly adds value to our route network.”
Fernandes said AirAsia was also “looking forward to strengthening our domestic routes in Indonesia via our hub in Jakarta”.
AirAsia’s growth of its route network out of Kuala Lumpur comes as Malaysia Airlines hits back at the growing market power of the LCCs by offering low fares for bookings effective immediately till January 23, 2008, through its call centre, ticket offices and online.
The MAS promotional offers are for both domestic and regional air travel on the national carrier’s flights out of KL International Airport.
The special fares are available for travel from January 14 to March 31, 2008, on domestic routes and from January 9 to March 15, 2008, for regional sectors.
Malaysia Airlines commercial director, Dato’ Rashid Khan said, “We have something for everyone in our January 2008 offers.
“We also want to encourage more people to book online as it has never been easier, especially as we are advancing towards full electronic ticketing by this year.”
One-way fares start from RM39 for Malaysian domestic travel, RM 79 for ASEAN destinations, RM199 to China and RM399 to the Indian Sub-Continent.
For destinations in ASEAN countries, fares start from RM79 to Medan, RM99 to Yogyakarta -Malaysia Airlines’ newest destination in Indonesia – and RM119 to Phuket
