AirAsia eliminating some payment processing fees

Thursday, 31 Jul, 2019 0

Low-cost airline AirAsia says it will ditch processing fees for some payment methods from October 2019.

It is scrapping fees for using online banking and credit cards.

Bookings on the AirAsia website are subject to a wide range of payment processing fees which range from RM4 ($1.33) for direct debit and can rise to as much as RM16 for using UnionPay.

Customers using AirAsia’s digital wallet app BigPay pay no additional fees.

"We still have some charges to drive traffic to cheaper, safer methods but there will be methods with no fees," tweeted group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes.

The airline also offers cash payment options at convenience stores in some countries, e-gift vouchers and payments using BIG points from the loyalty programme.

Fernandes said the airline is ‘constantly looking to lower fares so that passengers won’t suffer,"  referring to its ongoing and so far unsuccessful legal battle with the operator of Klia2 airport over increased passenger service charges.
