AirAsia India appoints Tata Steel exec as new CEO
AirAsia India has named Sunil Bhaskaran as new CEO.
Bhaskaran joins the airline from Tata Steel, part of the airline’s major backer Tata Sons.
Bhaskaran takes over as chief executive officer and managing director from November 15, 2018 ‘to oversee the next phase of expansion and growth of the company,’ the airline said in a release.
He has been with Tata for 30 years and had progressed through the ranks from a management trainee to VP of corporate services.
"We are delighted to welcome Bhaskaran as the new CEO & MD of AirAsia India. With India’s aviation sector growing at a rapid pace, we are confident his extensive experience, ability to drive performance and work seamlessly with all stakeholders will be a great asset," said S Ramadorai, chairman, AirAsia India.
Ramadorai is being replaced by Tata Sons president Banmali Agrawala, and there are further changes taking place at the top.
Asia group CEO Tony Fernandes is reportedly stepping down from the AirAsia India board along with deputy group CEO Bo Lingam.
This comes ahead of a possible criminal conspiracy case against Fernandes, Lingam and a third director over alleged bribes paid via lobbyists to fast track government approval to begin international flights.
AirAsia India is a joint venture between Tata Sons and the Malaysia based AirAsia Group.
