AirAsia suspending Davao-Kuala Lumpur route
Less than a year after launching the route, AirAsia said it will halt Davao-Kuala Lumpur flights for commercial reasons.
The four times weekly service will be suspended from August 21.
The service hasn’t met expectations and Davao City tourism officer Generose Tecson this week said a dearth of halal-friendly amenities including restaurants has likely put off Malaysian travellers.
"I think we can attribute this with the cancellation of Davao-Kuala Lumpur flight. Perhaps the passengers from Malaysia searched for possible halal establishments and restaurants here in the city and did not find a lot."
Tecson said there were less than 20 Muslim-friendly establishments in the city and only one is officially halal-certified.
Tecson is still hopeful the airline may retain a weekly KL- Davao flight.
AirAsia is contacting passengers with reservations from August 21 and offering alternative options.
Customers can change travel dates free of charge or reroute their journey via Manila or Cebu.
They can also retain a credit for the cancelled flights and use at a later date within 180 days.
AirAsia Philippines recently announced it will relocate all international flight services to and from Cebu at Mactan Cebu International Airport’s new terminal 2 early next month.
Aside from KL, it also serves Singapore, Taipei, Incheon, Shenzhen and Hangzhou from Cebu.
