AirAsia X confirms USD5 billion Airbus order
Budget long haul carrier AirAsia X has finalised a $5 billion order with Airbus for 30 A321XLR aircraft as well as an additional 12 A330neo jets.
AirAsia X will start receiving the A330neos in mid-2020 while the A321XLR will start flying sometime in 2023.
The new jets will offer options to spread its wings to new destinations.
"This order reaffirms our selection of the A330neo as the most most efficient choice for our future wide-body fleet. Additionally, the A321XLR offers the longest flying range of any single aisle aircraft and will enable us to introduce services to new destinations," said AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes
The flying range will allow the airline to venture further, with Europe a possibility, said AirAsia X chairman Sri Rafidah Aziz.
"This is the future of our long-haul operations."
The firm order reinforces AirAsia Group’s position as Airbus’ biggest customer for A320 Family aircraft with more than 600 aircraft across its various brands.
