Aircraft lessor sues AirAsia X to recover million in missed payments
AirAsia X is being sued by lessor BOC Aviation for missed aircraft lease payments.
The lawsuit claims the long haul arm of AirAsia Group and affiliate AAX Leasing Two owe nearly US$23 million in payments on four aircraft.
The airline disclosed the lawsuit in a stock market filing.
The AirAsia board is currently ‘reviewing’ the lawsuit, it said.
BOC began leasing the four Airbus A330-300s to AirAsia X in 2014.
AirAsia X has arguably been hit hardest of all AirAsia units as it is the group’s medium to long haul arm which relies on international travel.
No countries in Southeast Asia have yet opened international travel without restrictions.
AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes this week said the company is looking to raise about US$600 million to stay afloat.
The airline’s Japan joint venture is being reviewed, while the future of AirAsia X has long been in doubt.
Fernandes said it is in discussions with plane maker Airbus to restructure its aircraft orders.
"We’ve been a customer of Airbus for a long, long time and so we’ll both be professional about it and get out a win-win situation," Fernandes told Reuters.
