Airfares: How low can they go?

Tuesday, 13 Jan, 2010 0

SYDNEY – Flying within Australia has never been better value for money, with the best discount fares in January lower than ever, according to Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) analysis of the latest BITRE Domestic Airfares index.

TTF executive director Brett Gale said it’s never been cheaper to take an Australian holiday.

“Australians have been heading overseas in record numbers, with around 6.2 million of us travelling internationally in 2009 and much of that was driven by low airfares.

“Airlines understand that people are finding it hard to say no to the incredible prices for international flights, but travellers need to know that the best discount domestic fares available are the lowest since this survey began 18 years ago.

“You can even forget about inflation – the price tag for domestic flights is lower now than it was in 1992.”

Gale said the low airfares linked with discount accommodation offers made it the perfect time for Australians to get out and discover their own country.
