Airline passengers wait hours in freezing temperatures

The Christmas holiday season got off to a bad start for some United Airlines travelers flying out of O’Hare International Airport who reported waiting in sometimes freezing temperatures for several hours.

An 18-year-old student, James Dye, told the Chicago Tribune he stood in line for four hours.

“Dye and hundreds of others got their first taste of holiday travel frustration when they were forced to wait hours to check in for their United flights,” the newspaper said.

Lines became so long people were left waiting outside in 19-degree temperatures, according to a Department of Aviation spokesperson.

United officials blamed the problem on heavier than normal holiday traffic as well as extra luggage.
