Airlines employees face fraud charges over change fee scam
Three former airline reservations employees were charged with defrauding their employer in a coordinated scheme to pocket change fees.
The U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania alleges that two reservation agents and a supervisor would target travelers to book flights.
They were encouraged to book cheaper future flights, which the reservation agents then changed for the required date by bypassing the airline’s change fees system.
Instead, the indictment alleges the agents charged customers an admin fee and collected payment via CashApp which they pocketed.
The fraud scheme cost the airline more than $238,000 in fees, court documents say.
The indictment didn’t name the airline but the accused are thought to be then-Spirit Airlines employees.
