Airlines for America fights airline fee hike proposal
Airlines have urged Congress to reject the Trump Administration’s proposal to hike federal aviation taxes and fees as part of the 2019 budget.
The proposal wants to increase the TSA passenger security fee by $1 per one-way flight segment in 2019, rising to an extra $1.65 per one-way trip in 2020.
That would bring in more than $2 billion extra.
It also aims to hike the immigration customs fee.
Congress blocked a similar proposal to increase fees last year.
Trade group Airlines for America said any increase will stymie air travel growth and job creation.
"Increasing taxes in any form will add to the cost of flying for millions of Americans, curtail job growth and limit the options small and medium communities currently enjoy," A4A president and CEO Nicholas Calio said.
A4A says billions collected in aviation related fees have been shifted from the aviation industry in recent years.
"Billions of dollars have already been diverted from aviation security to go towards deficit reduction or other sectors of government. Congress should return this revenue to its intended purpose instead of raising TSA and CBP fees. Passengers already pay 21% in taxes on a typical domestic ticket and increasing them can’t be justified."
