Airlines link the hippy cities
Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia will operate a seasonal non-stop service between Christchurch and Perth this year following the success of the inaugural season.
The Boeing 767 service will operate twice weekly from December until April 25,2015.
Virgin Australia chief commercial officer Judith Crompton said both the Western Australian and Canterbury economies were performing well "and it makes sense to continue to support this with a direct air service between the two regions".
There are good reasons to visit both cities, according to recent travel articles.
Guardian Australia wrote: "Before arrival, the prospect of a visit to Christchurch – the city devastated by two earthquakes in 2011 – was coloured with expectations of visible destruction and tragedy.
"There’s no camouflaging the damage, but the transitional nature of the city’s new geography has given it new life.
"Bring your cameras and walking shoes; a weekend in the re-emerging capital of Canterbury is a treat for all lovers of the visual."
Perth also received a big tick from The New York Times whose writer claimed Perth is more "hip and happening” than the coolest corner of New York.
The newspaper boasted about WA’s capital as a "city embodying all things right about cities".
"Could a city really be so easy, breezy, green and pristine — so positively livable? I’d thought Williamsburg was hipster heaven; it pales beside Perth," according to The New York Times article.
