Airlines prepare for major US snowstorm
Airlines have begun issuing travel alerts and offering free changes or refunds, ahead of an expected snowstorm in the south and northeast today.
Nearly 2,000 flights, mainly domestic, have already been cancelled and airlines are warning that transatlantic flights might also be disrupted.
Virgin Atlantic is offering free changes to passengers due to travel to New York JFK and Newark, Washington, and Boston between January 22-24. Travellers can either bring their flight forward or book for a later date, up until January 30.
American Airlines and British Airways will also ease their change fee policies for travel on flights departing January until January 24 through the airports due to be affected.
For BA, these include Baltimore, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and New York.
Delta Air Lines has advised customers that cancelled or heavily delayed flights will be refunded and change fees are being waived for flights scheduled January 24-26.
Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, United Airlines and Frontier have all posted similar advisories and offered fee waivers to customers.
"Since we have advance notice of this weather event, we want to help out our customers by giving them the choice of making a change in their travel plans or requesting a refund," said Frontier spokesman Jim Faulkner.
The National Weather Service has posted a blizzard alert for Maryland, Washington, Virginia, West Virginia and Arkansas.
Snow in Kentucky and Tennessee has already caused the closure of some schools and resulted in at least one traffic related death.
