Airlines to offer gender-neutral ID options for passengers

Thursday, 20 Feb, 2019 0

Airlines will soon offer additional options for gender-neutral passengers booking tickets.

It follows agreement with trade group Airlines for America and the International Air Transport Association for a new non-binary ID standard.

United, American and Southwest said they will be updating their systems to provide additional gender options other than ‘male’ or ‘female.’

"US airlines value a culture of diversity and inclusion, both in the workplace and for our passengers, and we work hard each day to accommodate the needs of all travelers," said A4A spokesperson Vaughn Jennings.

United Airlines said it will allow customers to identify themselves as U (undisclosed), or X (unspecified) as well as selecting ‘Mx’ as a title ‘in the coming weeks.’

The new gender options for travel will start from June 1, although the decision when to roll it out is left up to individual airlines.
