Airlines warn ATC strike disruption will be even worse today

Airlines are warning passengers of even more cancellations and flight delays today (Tuesday), the second day of a five-day strike by French air traffic controllers.

European lobbying group A4E said the strike meant more than 400 cancellations across Europe yesterday, plus severe delays and flight detours.

It said there will be even more cancellations today because ATC staff at Marseille airport will also walk out, alongside ATC staff at Brest and Bordeaux airports.

Ryanair said it cancelled 45 flights on the first day of the strike and warned this would rise to 82 today.

Air France will only operate 74% of its domestic flights and 93% of its short and medium-haul flights today. All long-haul flights will operate as normal.

But it warned that additional last-minute delays and cancellations may occur.

A4E claims that since 2010, French ATC strikes have cost €12 billion to the EU economy.

It is calling on passengers to sign a petition, Keep Europe’s Skies Open, demanding that the French Government and the European Commission take action to prevent strike action.
