Airport passenger numbers plummet to 10-year low

Sunday, 30 Mar, 2020 0

Transportation Security Administration passenger screening data continues to show just how low air travel demand has plunged.

Since mid-March passenger numbers have been declining by double-digit percentages on a daily basis.

On Saturday just 184,000 passed through TSA checkpoints, compared to 2.1 million a year ago.

The more than 90% decline is the lowest number of daily air travelers for a decade.

Numbers have been below one million since March 17 and have been steadily falling daily.

US airlines have slashed capacity with most cutting by at least two-thirds.

Even with severely restricted flight options, planes are still taking off half-full.

More than 120,000 Americans have tested positive for coronavirus and 2,200 have died.

The TSA said more than 60 airport screening officers have tested positive for covid-19.
