Airport security to be stepped up again
UK: Terror threat HAS increased since war in Iraq, says Government
The Government is to increase security at many of the country’s ports and airports, after declaring that the war on Iraq has increased the risk of an imminent attack by al-Qaeda.
Despite repeated assurance before the war that conflict would not increase the chances of a terror attack in this country, the Home Secretary David Blunkett has talked of his “concern” over the situation and has ordered security to be stepped up at 3,000 airstrips and more than 70 sea ports around the UK. He said: “We are far from being complacent and are implementing specific measures to build up our defences.”
Exactly how the extra measures will be implemented is yet to be revealed; the Government came under fire when security was stepped up before the war after tanks and troops armed with machine guns were stationed at the country’s major airports.
