Airports in New York and Chicago face critical expansion moves

Monday, 23 Jun, 2005 0

The airport news this week in New York and Chicago was keyed to expansion:

• The city of Chicago said it did not have the money for a new $250 million taxiway, a need that could threaten a planned expansion of the often-delayed airport.

• And in New York, the head of the Port Authority that runs the three New York City airports says a fourth big airport may be needed to accommodate the city’s growing demand for airline service.

Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia told reporters there was a need for the new facility.

New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport has also seen rapid growth, but it is not approved for commercial flights. The plan there is to downsize the facility.

Officials said the biggest challenge for a fourth New York airport could be finding room to build it.

In Chicago, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) told city aviation officials they must guarantee the new taxiway will be finished before the agency allows new runways to open at O’Hare.

Newspaper accounts called the taxiway a “critical element” of a $6.6 billion expansion project aimed at reducing O’Hare’s delays and reducing the risk of runway accidents.

The airport’s two largest carriers — American and United — say their recent financial slump means they cannot contribute funds to help pay for the project.
