AITO announces Responsible Tourism Award finalists
At the last week’s AITO annual Conference in Cadiz province, Spain, the Association’s Responsible Tourism chairman John Gillies revealed the names of three companies shortlisted for its award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Responsible Tourism’.
The four judges – Libby Purves and Desmond Balmer, and responsible tourism experts Dick Sisman and Dr Harold Goodwin – chose Alternative Travel Group, Guerba Expeditions and Sunvil Africa as the three candidates.
Martin Crabb of Guerba and Chris McIntyre of Sunvil Africa gave presentations to the conference to explain how they had embraced the principles of Responsible Tourism in their businesses.
The session began with a tribute to the late Travers Cox, who died a couple of weeks ago. Founder and until recently MD of Explore Worldwide Ltd, Travers believed strongly in the philosophy of sustainability and responsibility in tourism.
As a tribute to his long-time support for AITO’s RT initiatives, the Association is to associate this year’s RT Awards with his name, by making the main prize the ‘Travers Cox Award for Outstanding Achievement’.
At AITO’s Press Launch on 7 January Libby Purves will announce the winner of the overall winner of the Award, as well as a number of ‘Commendation Awards’ to AITO operators and awards for a destination and a supplier.
