Alaska Airlines offering in-flight Microsoft tablet rental
Alaska Airlines is expanding its in-flight entertainment options by introducing new Microsoft IFE tablets that passengers can rent for long-haul flights beginning February 1.
The carrier will rent out Windows-powered Toshiba Encore 2 tablets for $8 to $10 per flight offering movies, Xbox games, music and digital magazines.
Tablet rental will be free for first class customers and MVP Gold75K members.
Alaska’s hand-held in-flight digEplayer system, which was developed by baggage handler Bill Boyer in 2003 will be phased out, the airline said.
In addition, its free premium in-flight entertainment content for customers with their own device will be extended until March 31.
It will then begin charging for selected movies and TV shows for $1.99.
"Our customers tell us they love our new, free, inflight entertainment service, and we’re listening. We’re excited to continue offering our premium content – like mainstream movies and TV to reward customers for trying out Alaska Beyond Entertainment," said Alaska Airlines’ managing director of brand marketing Halle Hutchison.
The Alaska Beyond Entertainment service was launched last month and will be rolled out on most of its aircraft by April.
