Alaska Airlines offers self-tag service
Alaska Airlines will offer passengers the option to print checked baggage tags before heading off to the departure airport.
The airline said it will start the service on April 21, on the Seattle-San Diego and Anchorage-Juneau routes before rolling it out to other airports in the summer.
This follows a successful trial which took place on flights between Seattle and Hawaii in 2013.
When a customer checks in online there is an option to print a checked-bag tag, which should be placed in a special tag holder and fixed on o the luggage.
The tag holders can be requested by mail or picked up at the airport.
Customers using the service can speed up the check-in process by dropping bags at self-tag express desks.
"Our goal is to be the easiest airline to fly. That’s why we’re introducing additional self-tagging capability for customers who prefer self-service options," said Curtis Kopf, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of customer innovation.
Alaska was also the first US airline to sell tickets online and claims to be the world’s first to allow passengers to check in and print boarding passes on the internet.
