All I want is a (conference) room with a view
There may not be a lot of productive work done at the new convention centre in Queenstown – the view might be just too distracting.
The shiny new Icon Convention Centre, managed and operated by Heritage Hotels in Queenstown boasts many features sure to please organisers, but it’s the stunning view that will capture the hearts of delegates.
Standing on the shores of Lake Wakatipu with the powerful view of the snow-capped Remarkables jumping in through the ceiling-to-floor windows, the Convention Centre commands one of the best business events view in the world.
Big call? Well, it’s a big view.
On opening the centre last week, Queenstown Mayor, Clive Geddes issued a gentle warning to potential PCOs.
“I can tell you’re not looking at me†he said jokingly while addressing the invited guests with his back to the windows. “I suggest that when you have your delegates in this room, you position the stage against the other wall. If they face the view, you’ll never have their attentionâ€
And Mayor Geddes is right. First time visitors to Queenstown and the convention centre are struck by the incredible beauty of the destination. Business sessions in the convention centre will no doubt finish on time as delegates clamber to their breakouts to capture the scenery.
The convention centre accommodates up to 200 theatre style and can be easily configured to banquet style. Purpose built, it has all the AV and technological capabilities required to stage a range of corporate events.
The rooftop terrace which can accommodate up to 250 guests for a cocktail party has uninterrupted views of pristine, undeveloped, 100% pure New Zealand. The iconic Remarkables Mountains provide more than enough themeing without the need for enhancement. Be prepared to have your breath taken away.
Organisers looking for a destination and convention facility with more than just a city aspect can’t ignore the unique beauty of Queenstown. The challenge will be to get their delegates to ignore the distractions while business sessions are running.
