Amazon India launches in-app flight bookings
Indian fliers now have a new option for booking flights.
E-commerce giant Amazon has quietly added a flights search and booking tool via a partnership with Indian OTA Cleartrip.
The function has been integrated with Amazon Pay in India and is just one of a slew of services that have been added since Amazon Pay launched in India nearly three years ago.
It already offers P2P payment transfers, utility bill payments, mobile phone top-ups, with food delivery, bus reservations and movie tickets recently announced.
"Over the past year, customers have rapidly adopted our payments services such as mobile recharges, utility payments and money transfers. They love the convenience we offer of shopping and paying — all in one single app," said Shariq Plasticwala, director of Amazon Pay.
The Cleartrip powered flight booking service is currently available for domestic segments only.
It carries fare content for India’s major mainline carriers including SpiceJet, Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, AirAsia India, and Vistara.
Amazon’s superapp strategy in India faces strong competition from homegrown Paytm.
Paytm’s rapid growth has been underpinned by adding key travel e-commerce partnerships such as flights and hotels, bus travel, rail and food delivery.
It says it handled sales of 38 million travel tickets in FY2018 and claims to be the country’s largest reseller of India rail tickets.
According to a Google India report, India’s travel market is expected to reach about $48 billion by 2020.
