American Airlines has updated its emotional support animal policy with a long list of animal breeds soon to be banned from flying.
Starting July 1, no more ferrets, goats, spiders and hedgehogs will be accepted although trained miniature horses make the cut.
Also barred are non-household birds, animals with tusks or horns, amphibians and reptiles.
Animals that ‘display any form of disruptive behavior’ will be grounded, American said.
Like its peers, American has outlined the necessary steps and documentation needed such as a signed form from a mental health professional at least 48 hours in advance.
It will however have a policy in place for last minute travel with an emotional support pet.
"We support the rights of customers, from veterans to people with disabilities, with legitimate needs for a trained service or support animal. Unfortunately, untrained animals can lead to safety issues for our team, our customers and working dogs onboard our aircraft," the airline said in a statement.
AA staffers have been trained to ask necessary questions which will determine whether an animal is applicable as an emotional support companion, the airline added.
