American Airlines halting Beijing service from Chicago
As part of several network changes, American Airlines will suspend flight service to Beijing Capital Airport from Chicago O’Hare from October.
The carrier cites competitive low fares on the route for the suspension.
"The current fare environment severely limits our ability to successfully compete between Chicago and Beijing," said Vasu Raja, American’s vice-president of network and schedule planning.
It currently operates Dreamliner services six times a week on the route and has served Beijing from Chicago for the past eight years.
The route is also served by Hainan Airlines and United Airlines.
American has asked the US Department of Transportation for a dormancy waiver on the Chicago-Beijing route and plans to restart it next year when Beijing’s new Daxing airport opens.
Daxing Airport will have a passenger capacity for 72 million passengers by 2025.
Daxing will become a major hub for American’s strategic partner China Southern Airlines which plans to base as many as 200 aircraft there.
