American Airlines warns of thousands more furloughs
American Airlines issued fresh warnings of furloughs in the spring with up to 13,000 employees impacted.
The airline said it will send out WARN notices this week in readiness for the end of current federal funding next month.
"The vaccine is not being distributed as quickly as any of us believed, and new restrictions on international travel that require customers to have a negative Covid-19 test have dampened demand," American’s CEO Doug Parker wrote in a memo to workers.
United Airlines sent a similar warning to 14,000 workers last week.
Federal payroll funding for airlines is due to end on 31 March.
It is the second round of aid after Congress gave airlines $25 billion in March 2020.
Airline unions have called for another $15 billion in federal payroll support to secure jobs through September 30.
"We are fully behind our union leaders’ efforts to fight for an extension and we will lend our time and energy to support this effort in every way we can," American said.
Furlough notices include 4,245 flight attendants, 1,850 pilots and 1,205 passenger service agents.
