American Airlines will build new operations center at DFW
American Airlines will build a new flight operations center in Dallas-Fort Worth to oversee operations of its combined American and US Airways fleet.
Groundbreaking of an Integrated Operations Control Center close to its Fort Worth HQ will begin within the next month, the airline said in a communication to employees.
American expects the new facility will be operational by the third-quarter of 2015 when it will take over functions currently done at US Airways’ operations center in Pittsburgh.
The consolidation will mean around 600 employees will need to relocate to Fort Worth, the company said.
"The best long-term solution is a new, state-of-the-art facility that can house all our team members needed for our daily demands," the letter said.
"Consolidating our two operations centers, and locating the team near our primary flight training center and corporate headquarters was the right decision for our business and our customers."
"For many located in Pittsburgh, the decision to move to Dallas-Fort Worth is a life-changing one and we don’t take that lightly," it said, adding that human resource staff were on-site to meet workers and answer questions.
At the same time the city of Fort Worth may offer incentives for the center, according to Mayor Betsy Price.
She said the issue is up for discussion at a June 10 City Council meeting.
