American ditches oversize bag fees for some items

Thursday, 22 May, 2019 0

Good news for traveling musicians and athletes.

American Airlines is ditching its hefty $150 fee to check large sports equipment such as bicycles, surfboards, or musical instruments.

With immediate effect these items will only incur the regular $30 checked luggage fee if they weigh less than 50 pounds.

"American has made it easier for musicians and athletes to travel with their gear, by eliminating certain fees that were previously imposed on oversize equipment," said American spokesman Ross Feinstein.

The move is a response to customer feedback, the airline says.

The new policy also includes ski equipment for flights to the southern hemisphere if within the maximum weight limit.

American will still charge the $150 fee for certain other specialist equipment like scuba tanks.

American and United Airlines already allow free carriage for surfboards for flights to and from California.
