American football heading for Wembley Stadium
The Jacksonville Jaguars will play one regular-season American NFL “home” game at London’s Wembley stadium each year from 2013 to 2016.
The St Louis Rams are scheduled to play the New England Patriots at Wembley on October 28 this year, although they have dropped plans to play games at the venue in future years, due to a supporter backlash.
Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, said, “Our goal is to continually grow the game, and this commitment by the Jacksonville Jaguars represents a major step forward in our international efforts.
"We have had a tremendously positive reaction to our sport in the UK.”
The NFL claims to have a “current fan base of 11 million” in the UK, “including more than two million avid fans”.
A league press release said all 65,000 tickets so far made available for the Rams v Patriots match on October 28 had been sold.
Remaining tickets will be made available in September.
