American partners on $1 billion Miami terminal expansion
American Airlines is partnering with Miami-Dade County to upgrade Miami Airport’s Concourse D in a $1 billion expansion project.
The development will completely revamp the D60 area.
Seventeen new boarding gates will be built, with individual waiting lounges, and each with capacity for larger aircraft.
The current tarmac level gates can only accommodate smaller regional jets.
These new gates will enable direct access to the international arrivals hall on Concourse D, enabling more connecting flight options for American Airlines customers.
The concourse will also be expanded with new dining and retail outlets and gets an updated baggage-handling system.
The airport says it is expected to be completed by 2030.
MIA is a major hub for American, which accounts for about 60% of passenger numbers at the airport.
American offers about 400 daily a day from Miami presently.
The renovation project is part of the airport’s $9 billion MIA Plan, which includes a new concourse and revamped Central Terminal.
Separately, American is bringing a new Flagship Lounge to Miami Airport.
