American tourists rate Australia tops for summer travel
For the 10th year in a row, American tourists chose Australia the top choice for a vacation when cost is not an option. Europe was a popular destination for those polled in the Harris Interactive survey. More than half chose a European country as their top vacation spot.
Other findings:
• Rounding out the top five vacation destinations were Italy, No. 2, followed by Great Britain, Ireland and France.
• A slight majority of US adults or 54% say they will take a vacation this summer. Almost half plan to stay in the US.
• Most American travelers cited visits to friends and family as the major reason for taking a vacation.
• Top vacation areas include the Beach (36%), a scenic trip (29%) and visiting theme parks (20%).
