Americans show keenest interest in travel to World Cup

With the World Cup tournament just two weeks away, cheap flight search site Skyscanner has studied its flight search data and discovered that the keenest nation to travel to host country South Africa is the Americans.

Despite the sport not having the same grip on the nation as it does around Europe, searches for travel from the US to South Africa have risen 440% on the same period last year.

That beats Spain, where a 409% spike has been seen, Brazil (399%), France (331%), Australia (308%), Portugal (272%), Germany (250%) and the Netherlands (226%). Travel searches by English fans to South Africa went up 206% – only higher than Italy (134%).

Skyscanner co-founder Barry Smith said: “It’s great to see the Americans taking such an interest in the World Cup, especially as football is not one of America’s favourite sports.

“But we were surprised to see that the Italians appear to be showing less support for their team than most of the other nations in the competition.”
