Amsterdam mulls full cruise ship ban
Amsterdam is now considering a complete ban on ocean going cruise ships, highlights the local newspaper NL Times.
It comes as new restrictions on tourism are due to take effect in 2026.
Amsterdam’s mayor and councillors are advocating for a full ban of ships, saying this should be the city council’s position after years of debate over cruise ship traffic restrictions.
The existing plan to restrict cruise ship traffic includes limiting port calls to one ship a day and no more than 100 calls per year.
There are also plans to relocate the city centre passenger terminal out of the city by 2035.
Additionally, all ships are required to use shore power from 2027.
Now, city officials say it makes more financial sense to just ban all cruise ships from the city.
“We are finally going to free Amsterdam from these floating apartment blocks,” Councillor Rob Hofland said.
The ultimate decision will come after March local elections and a new city council government is formed.
If a total ban is implemented, Rotterdam, about one hour away by road, will likely become the main alternative for cruise lines.
