Andes plane crash survivor to speak at Advantage conference

Nando Parrado, the Uruguayan survivor of the 1972 Andes plane crash, has been confirmed as a keynote speaker at this year’s Advantage Travel Centres conference in Spain.

Parrado is renowned to be inspirational in his public speaking where he focuses on team work, leadership, motivation, change, planning and strategy and handling crisis, according to the conference organisers.

During his conference speeches, he focuses on his experiences after the crash where survivors of the flight to Chile, on which he was travelling, were left stranded in the Cordillera de Los Andes for 72 days.

They were rescued after Parrado walked across mountains for 10 days suffering from fatigue, hunger and enduring night time temperatures of below 30 degrees to eventually find a shepherd who raised the alarm and saved the remaining survivors.

Following the crash Parrado became a successful businessman and is now the CEO of six companies.  He believes his success and confidence is a result of his life changing experience.

He joins former BBC director general Greg Dyke as a speaks at the event in Sitges on September 26-28.

The theme of the Advantage Travel 2008 conference is: “Success, the only option”.

Advantage chief executive John McEwan said: “The travel industry faces many challenges over the coming year and Advantage is committed to supporting our members.

“Delegates to the conference will be inspired and motivated by Nando and, as our plans progress for the conference, it promises to be one of the ‘must attend’ events of the year.”
