Melbourne will host the opening match of the 2015 Asian Cup featuring the Socceroos.

The opening ceremony and match will be held at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands in January 2015.

Sydney is expected to host the final, with Melbourne expected to host six of 32 matches played in eastern Australian states and territories.

Australia was announced as the host nation of the 2015 Asian Cup after its uncontested bid was rubber-stamped by the Asian Football Confederation in Doha overnight.

The 2011 Asian Cup takes place this month in Qatar.
