ATEC appoints new Chairman
The Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) has announced that their new independent Chairman will be Mr John King.
Mr King will be known to many as the recently retired Chairman of Tourism Tasmania. He is also the Chairman of the Southern Cross University School of Tourism and Hospitality Management Advisory Board, and is a board member of the Sustainable Tourism CRC. He has been a member of the consultative committees for the recent Emerging Markets Strategy and the Action Plan for Japanese Tourism.
He commenced his career in tourism by establishing one of Victoria’s first regional tourism authorities and spent three years as Deputy Director of the Melbourne Tourism Authority. He then spent 12 years in executive positions at the Australian Tourist Commission, including four years as Regional Director, the Americas which saw him implement the “Hogan” campaign.
He received multiple honours from the foreign tourism community including an invitation to twice address the US Senate Tourism Caucus. He holds senior positions within the UN World Tourism Organisation Business Council and the Pacific Asia Travel Association, of which he is a board member. He is also on the editorial board of the London-based International Journal of Vacation Marketing.
In 1995 Mr King established Global Tourism & Leisure, one of the most respected consultancies in the tourism industry, both in Australia and abroad.
He will officially assume his duties following a handover from current Chairman David Mazitelli at the ATEC Symposium in Cairns next month.
