Athens is safe, claim Greeks
Greek tourism chiefs have stressed that Athens is pulling out all the stops to ensure that it hosts a safe and efficient summer Olympic Games in 2004.
There have been concerns that return of the Olympics to its home in Greece might prove a target for terrorists.
The Greek government is devoting more than $600 million to security planning and infrastructure and is training 45,000 police, armed forces and other personnel to patrol the games.
Greek National Tourism Organisation president Yannis Patellis, speaking in London, said: “I hope that everything about terrorism will have been solved; we still have two years until the Olympics.
“Terrorism is an international question, not just a question for Athens.”
Greek tourism chiefs have assured authorities that plans to improve Athens’ infrastructure and hotels are going to plan.
