Athens rip-off warning
Authorities in the Greek capital Athens are reportedly handing out price lists of everyday shopping items in an effort to stop tourists being ripped off by unscrupulous traders during the Olympic Games.
According to The Guardian, leaflets in several languages will be distributed at Athens airport and other points of entry to the country as from tomorrow.
A spokesman for the country’s development ministry admitted that many restaurants had sharply increased their prices in time for the Games, reportedly adding: “This is a practice that brings shame to our country and has to stop.”
As well as the official government advice lists, The Guardian reports, other consumer associations are handing out guides to prices.
The newspaper states that items included on the lists include “fast food, alcoholic drinks, beach umbrellas and visits to the doctor”, as well as reminders about “wayward taxi drivers” and restaurateurs who “forget” to hand our receipts. The Games run from 13 to 29 August.
